India ranks 69 in World Giving Index: It's time to cultivate generosity
By Shri Dinesh Kumar, CEO, DLS Elder Support Service
How generous and charitable are hindus? Charity is considered one of the highest virtues in Hinduism. It is high time to cultivate generosity to overcome their attitude and cultivate detachment and dispassion. The scriptures suggest that generosity or charitable nature leads to removal of sinful karma and there by to self purification. That's why it is said way back in Sanskrit:
The charity is also self cleansing and one of the recommended spiritual practice. By donation(charity) and sharing generosity through selfless giving, one can overcome danavatvam(cruality & harshness)
As per World Giving Index India ranks 69 and Myanmar is on top. As we know Myanmar is the poorest country. It ranks 149 in terms of per capita income and 127 in terms of GDP. Myanmar is a good example of humanity or being human and generous, is not a by product of wealth and abandence but attitude and character.
It shows that faith plays and important role in influencing people towards charity, for example all Buddhist countries are mostly poor, they rank high amongst most charitable countries in the world. Myanmar(1) Sri Lanka(9) Bhutan(11) Thailand(21)@. Inspire of a rich tradition of charity by our ancisters like Dadheechi, Raja Shivi, DaanVeer Karn, Raj Harshvardhan and others India ranks 69 in world giving index. Keeping Buddhist nation in view there is scope for people to cultivate giving nature. The Vedas proclaim that charity is one of the highest virtues for human being upon earth. They are expected to be charitable to God, humans and other living beings. Therefore Hindus should return to their basic virtues as part of the Hindu way of life. Giving help us overcome our selfish nature & see life from a larger perspective as a manifestation of God. Hindu scripture equate selfishness with evil and declare that engaging in desire ridden selfish action lead to bondage & suffering. They consider the practice of karma yoga or doing selfless actions with out desire and expectations a great virtue. Practising charity or generosity is the most ideal path for people who are engaged in worldly actions. People can do it on their own, in their local communities & raise awareness among others about the need to cultivate giving nature.
At last "giving is not just about making donation, but it's about making a difference"
